I don’t love promoting myself

Insights from the work: what clients are navigating, what I’m learning, and ways to keep growing.

Reader,

If I’m honest, I don’t enjoy promoting myself, and as a Type 3 who spent my career before kids in marketing, public relations, and advertising, you’d think it would come easily. Admittedly, I thought it would be easier than it is (cue the self-preservation Type 3, the countertype that can look more like a Type 2).

I was just on a walk with a dear friend who is a brilliant counselor, and she and her husband, a middle school teacher, offer co-parenting coaching for blended families. I would shout their work from the mountaintops, because the world needs what they do. But when it comes to my own work, everything in me wants to hold back. So I’m practicing what I’d gladly do for them, and sharing anyway.

The Type·ish Spiritual Formation Summit starts tomorrow, October 20, and there’s still time to register for free. My Story Spotlight, “I Don’t Have to Be Impressive: Why I Stopped Serving at Church for a Season,” will be available all four days, October 20–23.

You’ll also find conversations with Suzanne Stabile, Dan Allender, Adam Young, Ruth Haley Barton, and others, alongside the summit’s interviews, workshops, and the nine Story Spotlights.

But beyond the top names in the Enneagram and spiritual formation, I know people in this lineup personally and would shout them from the mountaintops, too. My spiritual mentor, who passed away last year and whom I mention in my session, trained with Bill and Kristi Gaultiere of Soul Shepherding, and they are amazing.

The CrossPoint Ministry panel will be so worth it, since I’ve done a number of their trainings and they’re quality through and through. And Christa Hardin of Enneagram + Marriage, who I trained with this year, really knows her stuff.

Here’s how to watch:

  • Register once, and the summit team will email each day’s session links at 6 a.m. Central Time
  • Each day’s interviews and workshops stay free until noon Central Time the following day
  • All nine Story Spotlights are available throughout the four days

It’s completely virtual and on demand, so there’s no live schedule to work around.

I hope to see you there!

P.S. This is the one summit where I buy the All Access Pass right away, because I always go back to sessions and listen to them again and again. If you know you won’t get to all the sessions and want to come back to them, the early-bird price is $59 until the summit begins; then it goes up to $79. The All Access Pass gives you immediate, lifetime access to all 45 sessions, plus audio downloads, transcripts, and other resources.

I’m a summit affiliate, so if you purchase an All Access Pass through my links, I may earn a commission.

October Reader, "Greet Andronicus and Junia, my relatives who were in prison with me; they are prominent among the apostles, and they were in Christ before I was.” Romans 16:7, NRSV Did you catch that Paul uses our phrases in that verse to describe her? My relatives In prison with me Prominent among the apostles In Christ before I was Think about that for a second. Paul is telling us his relative Junia followed Christ before he did, in years when believers were being persecuted. And she was...

September 2026 Insights Insights from the work: what clients are navigating, what I’m learning, and ways to keep growing. Reader, I couldn't sleep the night after I recorded my Story Spotlight for the Type·ish Spiritual Formation Summit. My brain went into overdrive with all the classic Enneagram 3 lines: I shared too much. I shared too little and didn't sound authentic. What was I thinking saying yes to this? What will Tyler think of me? Did I meet his expectations? Ugh... I could go on and...

October Reader, If there is ONE thing I've learned from living in the United States for 24 years this month, it's that "college" means one thing to Americans and an entirely different thing to Canadians. I learned pretty quickly that I can't say "I weight lifted in college." Which, while true, makes Americans picture me on a full-ride sports scholarship at a university like the University of Washington, which they call college. I had to change that language fast. A Canadian, though, would...
