Insights from the work: what clients are navigating, what I’m learning, and ways to keep growing.

Reader,

I couldn't sleep the night after I recorded my Story Spotlight for the Type·ish Spiritual Formation Summit. My brain went into overdrive with all the classic Enneagram 3 lines: I shared too much. I shared too little and didn't sound authentic. What was I thinking saying yes to this? What will Tyler think of me? Did I meet his expectations? Ugh... I could go on and on.

Then this week Tyler sent the promo reel for my session to share on social media, and as I pressed "publish," my heart rate started rising and I was literally in tears. "What will people think of me?" was cranked up good and loud. The only thing I knew to do was get outside, sit in the sun, pray along with the Lectio 365 midday prayer, and breathe deeply until my heart rate slowed.

So yes, even as an Enneagram coach with practices and some work behind me, it's incredible how one small thing can send me spiraling. I might sound like I have this all figured out, but I am human.

In my Spectrum of Capacity™, I use F-words to help personalize where we are: Flourishing, Functional, and Fractured. Reflecting on how I felt yesterday, I realized I'd found a new one not in the spectrum: filleted. It's the feeling of being cut open and seen, and it's exactly what sharing this story feels like for me as a Type 3.

The story itself is "I Don't Have to Be Impressive: Why I Stopped Serving at Church for a Season." We talk about how the need to be impressive can hide inside serving, productivity, and church life, and why stepping back from serving for a season helped me learn how to simply BE. I also share the questions I ask now before saying yes to something, like "Do I like my reasons?" and "Is this a good idea or a God idea?"

And while nothing in me wants to share it, I'm sharing it anyway.

My session is free, available all four days of the summit, October 20–23, 2026, and completely virtual and on demand.

The nine Story Spotlights, one of us for each type, offer a personal look at spiritual growth through our Enneagram type. You might start with your own type, or listen to someone whose experience is different from yours.

But don't just go for me! Just last night I heard Dan Allender at the Into the Quiet event with John Mark Comer, talking about trauma and silence, and it was so good. His summit session last year was so remarkable I listened to it three times! He's back this year, with conversations about prayer, attachment, discernment, spiritual practices, and the changing seasons of faith, alongside Suzanne Stabile, Ruth Haley Barton, Adam Young, Beth McCord, and others.

October Reader, If there is ONE thing I've learned from living in the United States for 24 years this month, it's that "college" means one thing to Americans and an entirely different thing to Canadians. I learned pretty quickly that I can't say "I weight lifted in college." Which, while true, makes Americans picture me on a full-ride sports scholarship at a university like the University of Washington, which they call college. I had to change that language fast. A Canadian, though, would...

September 2026 Reader A couple of years ago, I watched a documentary about mosaics in Zeugma being uncovered- two-thousand-year-old pieces of art, buried for centuries, now being brought back into the light. One shot stayed with me: the camera zoomed in on a woman's face in the tiles, a mythological figure, stunning in her own right. Then the camera pulled back as they began brushing away more of the earth and silt. She was one piece of an enormous mosaic. The larger mythological tale...

September 2026 Insights Insights from the work: what clients are navigating, what I’m learning, and ways to keep growing. Reader, Would you be up for testing something for me before it goes "really public"? Tyler Zach, who I met on a podcast in 2023 (Tyler is a 3w4 and I'm a 3w2) invited me to be a Story Spotlight guest for his upcoming Type'ish Spiritual Formation EnneaSummit. I'll be talking about being an Enneagram 3 and needing to step back from "performing by serving" at church. still...
